25 Fun Campfire Games for Kids, Adults, and Families!

Looking for fun games to play around the campfire? Here’s a list of campfire games for kids, adults, and families – Fun campfire games for everyone!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about camping? For me, and probably most, tents, sleeping bags, rugged landscapes, a beautiful night sky, and of course sitting around the campfire are the first to pop in. Seriously, what’s a trip to the woods without the iconic flickering flames of that warm centerpiece? It completes the picture and creates a mood that’s impossible to duplicate without.

Besides keeping you warm as the temperature drops and roasting tasty marshmallows before their conversion into s’mores, a gentle fire is the perfect setting for fun, exciting, and sometimes ridiculous, games. Adults, groups, kids, and families, it doesn’t matter who you are, an entertaining game can be the cherry on top after a long or tiresome day in the woods.

Campfire games

Even in today’s modern age of technology, a successful camping trip is incomplete without doing a few things “old-school” style. It’s kind of the point right? We usually spend a few days and nights in the backcountry to escape the hustle and bustle of our hectic lives, not bring it with us.

So with all that in mind, let’s take a look at a few games that don’t require batteries to play. Some require nothing but your mind while others are small, compact, and easily transportable. I’ve got card games, travel-friendly games, games for adults, and even simple activities for the very young.

Hopefully, one or two of these will interest you and keep your family amused all night long! At the very least, they’ll inspire you to come up with games of your own.

Enjoy!

Free Games Around the Campfire

Let’s start with the classics – games that require nothing but your imagination (and maybe a slip of paper or two) and a willingness to have fun. These are perfect when you’re packing light or just want to keep things simple.

1. 20 Questions

A tried-and-true favorite, 20 Questions is as simple as it gets. One person thinks of something – it could be anything, from a celebrity to a kitchen gadget – and the rest of the group has 20 chances to ask yes or no questions to figure out what it is. The only rule? The person who guesses correctly gets to pick the next thing. It’s a great way to spark conversation and learn how your fellow campers think. The first to successfully guess 3 correct answers wins!

Campfire games - 20 questions

Why it’s awesome: It’s simple, needs no equipment, and can last as long as you want, plus you can do it at a leisurely pace. One game could last 10 minutes or an hour!

2. Two Truths and a Lie

Here’s a game that’s part icebreaker, part detective work. Each person takes a turn sharing three statements about themselves – two of which are true, and one that’s a lie. The group then has one chance to guess the fib. The best part? You’ll probably learn some unexpected things about your friends or family! If you’re able to stump everyone, you get a point. Whoever scores 5 first, after everyone has gone, wins the game!

Campfire games - two truths and a lie

Why it’s awesome: It’s perfect for both small and large groups and can be quite funny as people try to come up with their best poker faces.

3. One Word Story

For this next entry, hilarity usually ensues as the group collectively tells a story, but with a twist – each person can only add one word at a time. The first player starts with a single word, and the next player immediately adds the next word, and so on. The challenge is to keep the story coherent (or hilariously incoherent) while thinking quickly. If you laugh, say more than one word, or stutter/stumble what you’re saying, you’re out! The last one standing wins!

Campfire games - one word story

Why it’s awesome: It’s unpredictable, keeps you focused, and can lead to some truly obnoxious and creative stories.

4. Charades

This one’s a crowd-pleaser for sure. Write down a bunch of words or phrases on slips of paper, toss them in a hat, and let the acting begin! Players take turns drawing a slip and acting it out without speaking, while the rest of the group tries to guess what it is. From animals to movie titles, the possibilities are endless, and the results are usually pretty hysterical. Play in singles or teams and stop at a pre-determined score.

Why it’s awesome: It’s high-energy, great for all ages, and guaranteed to get everyone laughing. There’s a reason it’s a classic!

5. Name That Tune

If your group loves music, this is the game for you. One person hums or whistles a tune (no lyrics allowed!), and the others try to guess the song. You can stick to a theme, like ’80s hits or Disney songs, or keep it generic. The person who guesses correctly gets to hum the next tune. The first person with 3 correct guesses wins! **Extra points for a guitar!**

Campfire games - name that tune

Why it’s awesome: It’s a fun way to tap into everyone’s musical knowledge and gets people thinking (and laughing) fast, especially for the let’s say, less musically inclined!

6. Time to Rhyme

As you can probably guess, this game is all about rhyming. One person starts with a simple word like “cat” and the next will have 5 seconds to rhyme another word like “bat”. It continues until a player can’t come up with a new word or repeats one that’s already been said. If you mess up, you’re out! For an added layer of difficulty, up the ante and try full sentences like “Today I went for a hike…” and the next, “…cause I didn’t need a bike…”, “…and I don’t ride a trike..” and so on. The last one remaining wins!

Why it’s awesome: It gets the creative juices flowing while being fun and engaging. I guarantee you’ll get a few chuckles with this one!

Travel-Friendly Board Games

Sometimes, you just want the comfort of a good ol’ board game, but lugging a big box around isn’t always practical. Luckily, there are plenty of compact, travel-friendly board games that are perfect for bringing along on your next adventure. Here are some of the best for the job.

7. Codenames: Deep Undercover

While technically Codenames is a card game, its orientation and space needed feel big, like a board game so I included it in this section. It’s a wildly popular word game that’s ideal for groups of 6-8. The basic premise? You’re trying to get your team to guess specific words on a grid using only one-word clues, without leading them to the opposing team’s words or the deadly assassin word. The Deep Undercover version adds a cheeky, adult twist, making it a hilarious choice for older players. Best of all, the cards are easy to pack, and the game doesn’t require much space to play.

Why it’s awesome: It’s easy to learn, great for junior detectives, and leaves you wanting more. A fun party game that does well with a roaring fire as a backdrop.

8. Travel Scrabble

For the wordsmiths out there, Travel Scrabble is a no-brainer. It’s just like the classic Scrabble you know and love, but in a compact form that’s designed for those on the move. The tiles snap into place on the board, so you won’t have to worry about losing them in the dark, and the board folds up neatly for easy storage. If you decide on this one, don’t forget the dictionary at home, or maybe download the app before you leave. You’re going to need it!

Campfire games - travel scrabble

Why it’s awesome: It’s a beloved classic, perfect for long evenings by the fire, and the travel version is super convenient, just pass it back and forth! Best suited for quiet and relaxed evenings.

9. Hive Pocket

If you’re looking for something a little different, Hive Pocket is a fantastic two-player game that’s often described as a mix between chess and dominoes. The goal is to surround your opponent’s queen bee with your insect tiles while protecting your own. The pieces are small, durable, and come in a handy carrying bag, making it perfect for any night under the stars.

Campfire games - hive pocket

Why it’s awesome: It’s strategic, quick to play, and packs down into a small, portable bag. The pieces are well made and will last for many adventures!

10. Pass the Pigs

Remember Yahtzee? Well, this is its eccentric cousin! Instead of rolling dice, players take turns rolling little “piggies” in an attempt to land them in certain configurations like one of them lying on their side for 1 point, or back for 5. Score big with a Leaning Jowler, where a pig ends up on its snout and ear!  All you need is a flat surface, the gentle glow of your fire, and 2 or more willing participants. The first to 100 points wins the game!

Why it’s awesome: This game is perfect when you want to play something without focusing too hard. Kids will love the theme and parents will love the price tag. Easy and entertaining.

11. Magnetic Chess

What do you get when you mix a bunch of magnets and a rope barrier? A fun strategy game with an explosive finish! With magnetic chess, each player attempts to place their pieces within a confined area without attracting other magnetic rocks. If they do, they have to scoop out all that clumped together. Play continues until 1 of the players places their last piece without causing a cluster. It’s quick to learn but tricky to master. Play one-on-one or in groups with different variations. Loads of endless fun!

Why it’s awesome: It gets you thinking and provides a beneficial learning curve that’ll get the brain juices flowing. It’s also tiny and can be played pretty much anywhere!

Campfire Games for Adults or Teens

This next group of games can be played by all, but are usually favored by those 14+. They require a bit more skill, a little athleticism, or coordination but usually provide tons of fun. Here are a few favorites that are perfect for playing around the fire, just don’t get too close!

12. Four Square Volleyball

Here’s a spin on the popular high-school sport without the required intensity you are probably imagining. Instead of teams, each player stands in their section and attempts to hit a volleyball over the crossed net, but just like Four Square you only get to hit it once. The net is lightweight, easily compacted down, and height adjustable. It’s sure to be a hit with everyone and will quickly become the “can’t leave without” accessory you’ll be taking with you everywhere. I can’t recommend it enough!

Why it’s awesome: You don’t need to be in great shape to play, it’s fun for all and somehow gets you hooked into playing game after game. A real crowd pleaser!

13. Suspend – A Family Game

Granted you might need a table for this next entry, but it’s so much fun and interesting I had to include it. The goal is to safely balance all of your wire strands onto a skinny supporting base rod, think the whacky version of Jenga. It’s simple, straightforward, and provides hours and hours of entertainment. Play in teams or individually, either way, you’re going to have a blast!

Campfire games - suspend

Why it’s awesome:  It’s an exceptional screen-free play option that boosts creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive skills. Takes a minute to learn, but a while to master!

14. Sling Puck

For the highly competitive and lovers of fast-paced action, you have to get Sling Puck. All you have to do is fire your black pucks through the narrow opening but it’s not so easy. Your competitor is trying to do the exact same thing! It’s like a shrunk-down version of air hockey without the need for air, or electricity for that matter. It comes available in 3 different sizes so adults, teens, and even older kids have options that work best. Play on the ground, on your laps, or a table, anywhere you choose will become a playful battleground!

Why it’s awesome: Quick to learn, easily transportable, highly addictive, and very competitive. Makes a great activity for any pair looking to see “who’s best!”.

15. SpikeBall

If you want to break a sweat and get in some exercise I have to recommend this extremely popular game that you’ve probably seen before at a beach, park, or other public space. Played in pairs, each team attempts to “spike” their ball off of the net on the ground to an area the opposing team is unable to return. It’s like reverse volleyball! One thing is for certain, you’ll become addicted to playing it! Make sure the fire is in the distance for this one!

Campfire games - spikeball

Why it’s awesome: It’s active, creates a sense of team camaraderie, gets you communicating, and tires you out. I swear hours feel like minutes playing this!

16. Bocce Ball

Another game that’s great for those who can’t sit around for too long and need to be up and moving. Usually played with 2 teams, but can easily go one-on-one, players alternate throwing balls across a small area, attempting to land each nearest the “Pallino” or “jack” (a small target ball). One point is awarded for each ball that is closer to the pallino than the nearest ball of the opposing team. First to 15 wins! As long as you have room, Bocce Ball will get in some use!

Why it’s awesome: It’s great for hand-eye coordination, active families, and those who don’t want to “think” too much, just play.

Reliable Card Games

Besides bringing a regular deck of cards with you, there are a few card games I suggest you take that always do well in an intimate setting. All of the following are easy to pick up yet exciting to play. It only takes a few rounds to get the hang of em and before you know it, you’ll feel like a seasoned pro!

17. Phase 10

Phase 10 is a rummy-style card game where the goal is to be the first to complete 10 different phases, each with its own set of challenges. Earn 2 sets of 3 or 1 set of 3 and a run of 4, and so on.  It’s a bit more complex than traditional rummy since you have to do what’s asked in a specific order, but that just means there’s more fun to be had! There’s a bit of strategy too since you try to outsmart your fellow players on how or when to play your hand. Great for 2-6 players and is certain to keep everyone engaged. Not suited for children under 7.

Why it’s awesome: It’s challenging, great for groups, and can lead to hours of gameplay.

18. UNO and UNO Flip

I can’t talk about travel-friendly games without mentioning UNO. This classic card game is easy to learn, fun for all ages, and can get surprisingly competitive. The deck is small enough to slip into your pocket, and you can play for as long (or as short) as you like. Plus, there’s nothing like the thrill of shouting “UNO!” and watching your friends scramble to catch up. For a bonus, check out UNO Flip, a variation where the cards are double-sided and can be “flipped” at any moment!

Campfire games - uno flip

Why it’s awesome: Uno is universally loved, easy to pack, and perfect for any camping trip. Uno flip adds a tricky layer that freshens up the game that’ll keep you on your toes!

19. Love Letter

Love Letter is a simple, fast-paced card game where you’re trying to deliver a love letter to the princess while keeping it away from the other players. It’s quick to learn and easy to play. The whole game consists of just 16 cards, making it incredibly portable. It’s perfect for filling those lulls in conversation or winding down after a day of hiking. Great for groups of 2-6 and ages 10 and up.

Why it’s awesome: It’s lightweight, quick, and perfect for small groups.

20. Exploding Kittens

If you’re looking for something a bit more offbeat, Exploding Kittens is a hilarious and fast-paced card game that’s perfect for anyone 7+. The goal is to avoid drawing an exploding kitten card – unless you have a defuse card to save yourself. The game is quick, chaotic, and guaranteed to get everyone laughing, plus if forces you to use your brain! The last player standing wins! One of my personal favorites!

Campfire games - exploding kittens

Why it’s awesome: It’s quirky, fast-paced, and the perfect mix of strategy and chaos. One round of this game and you’ll be hooked, plus the funny images are a riot!

Campfire Games for Kids

If you’ve got little ones in your group, you’ll want some games that are kid-friendly, easy to understand, and most importantly, fun! Here are a few of my favorite games that’ll keep the kiddos entertained and maybe even tire them out before it’s time to hit the sack.

21. I Spy

A classic game for kids, I Spy is simple, fun, and can be played anywhere including in a car, while you’re exploring or to keep them busy as you pitch your tent.  One person picks an object within sight and says, “I spy with my little eye, something that is…” and then gives a clue, like the color or shape of the object. The others take turns guessing until someone gets it right.

Campfire games - I spy

Why it’s awesome: It’s easy, requires no setup, and gets kids thinking and observing their surroundings. A great distraction that will feed your children’s attention for hours on end.

22. Campfire Sing-Along

Sometimes, the best games are those without winners. While a campfire sing-along isn’t technically a game, it is a great way to get everyone involved, especially if you’ve got a guitar or some other musical instrument handy. Young kids love singing their favorite songs and the memories you’ll all form will be priceless.

Campfire games - sing along

Why it’s awesome: It’s a great way to bring everyone together, easy to do, extremely popular for children ages 4-7, and can be as short or long as you want.

23. Shadow Puppets

If you’ve got a flashlight handy, shadow puppets are a fun and creative way to keep kids entertained. Use your hands to create shapes on the side of the tent or a nearby surface, and let the kids guess what animals or objects you’re making. You can also encourage them to create their own shadow puppets and even put on a little shadow puppet show. It’s a low-key way to wind down the night while still keeping the fun going.

Campfire games - shadow puppets

Why it’s awesome: It’s creative, calming, and requires nothing but a flashlight and a bit of imagination. Really tests your imagination!

24. Children’s Scavenger Hunt

It’s like bringing Easter with you to the forest! This fun and interactive game is great for ages 3-8 and challenges them to find common things around a campsite. Let the easy-to-read cards lead the fun train and watch as your little ones giggle and race to be the first to find every entry on the list. Your kids will have a blast discovering new objects and “thinking outside the box”. A great addition to any group or family with children.

Campfire games - scavenger hunt

Why it’s awesome: It’s simple, educational, and fun! What more do you need for a child’s game? Not much I say.

25. Would You Rather? Campfire Edition

Just like the classic version, players take turns reading funny and outlandish “Would you rather..?” questions while the rest of the kids give intentionally crazy answers, attempting to make everybody laugh. Anybody who smiles or makes “ha ha” noises receives no points while those who keep their composure score. After the book has gone around once, the highest total wins!

Campfire games - would you rather?

Why it’s awesome: The questions are silly and provide loads of entertainment for both the children and the parents listening in. You’ll be astonished at some of the answers you hear, I promise!

Final Thoughts

No matter where you’re camping or who you’re with, having a lineup of fun distractions at the ready is a surefire way to make your night by the fire unforgettable. Whether you’re challenging your friends to a strategic card game, or getting the kids involved with a shadow puppet show, these games will keep the fun going long after the sun sets.

Remember, the best campfire games are the ones that bring people together. They’re about laughter, connection, and making memories that’ll last long after the embers have cooled. So, next time you’re packing for a camping trip, don’t forget to toss a few games into your bag. And who knows? You might just discover a new favorite way to spend your evenings under the stars.

Happy camping, and let the games begin!
